During the field trip on Wednesday on our tour of The Establishment, we were asked to raise our hand if we could sing only two out of the entire class raised their hands. That posed the question of, think about what you could do accomplish when you give up feeling stupid. When I think about it, I can think of many times where I didn't do something out of fear of being laugh at. In business, the fear of failure stops you from succeeding. How do you overcome the fear of being judged and failing?
Also while at The Establishment, they talked about "Yes, and" in comparison to "Yes, but". saying "but" stops the progress of the conversation because of its negative connotation, "but" is equivalent to "no". Saying "Yes, and" makes a person more open to whatever you have to say. Now I stop myself every time I say but and think about how I can reword what I'm saying to make it sound less like an attack on their ideas and more of me trying to help. (it was also cool when Judy Bell said the same thing about saying "Yes, and". It's cool when there are connections between our speakers like that because it validates what they are saying even more.)

During class this past week Kim Purvis came and spoke to our class about leadership. She posed the question, "What is your leadership style?" and she talked about how she never really knew how to answer it when asked the question during an interview. She finally realized throughout her career, that the answers is that it depends on who you are leading. This made me come to the realization that to be a good leader you cannot take a one size fits all approach, with people, because everyone is so different. You have to keep in mind everyone and their personalities when leading them. Another point she made that stood out to me was that you should never ask someone else do do something you are not willing to do yourself. As a leader you should know that every little job, no matter how much you hate doing it or how hard it is, that it is important to your end goal. Which means that it has to be done and if you are not willing to do the task then why would someone else do it for you. I would say that this comes down to trust because people need to know that the work they put in for you, you would do the same for them. Building trust with your employees and everyone you work with is key to all business relationships, if a person knows that they can trust you they become more willing to do certain tasks and are a bit more comfortable doing them.
