YWCA of the Sauk Valley is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. On Monday, West CEO students learned about this mission statements that drives the work of the YWCA. Cilvia Rivera, Director of Community Services and Outreach, organized the visit and explained many of the programs and events offered. Jasmine, Immigrant Outreach Program, opened her statements in Spanish making most of us know how uncomfortable it must feel to not understand what is being said. Students also learned from Monica the work she does as Shelter Operations Manager who stated that simply asking, "Are you okay?" is one of the best things you can do for someone you suspect is struggling. She summarized 4 important points learned in her trainings: Believe them, listen, encourage, and give options. Lastly, Kayla, Prevention Coordinator shared the work she does in schools and engaged students in an activity about their expectation in a dating relation. So much more was learned about the important work of the YWCA of the Sauk Valley.
