West students visited with Keri Olson, Executive Director of United Way of Whiteside County. After brainstorming example of nonprofit organizations, Keri reviewed the many agencies and programs United Way supports. She discussed the skill set needed in her role, the structure of United Way, and fundraising efforts. Students concluded with an activity, SFL (Sandwich for Le), which required them to ask for a donation and supplies (they really left and got what was needed!), make the sandwich following regulations (gloves, etc.), write thank-you notes, and deliver the sandwich with a smile (yum!). The activity illustrated all the important steps needed to accomplish a community outreach project.
